On September 8, Rovshan Rustamov, Chairman of "Azerbaijan Railways" CJSC (ADY), a company under AZCON Holding, met with a U.S. business delegation visiting Azerbaijan.
During the meeting, guests were briefed on ADY’s operations, with a particular focus on its efforts to increase freight volumes along the Middle Corridor.
It was highlighted that ADY is successfully diversifying its routes along the East–West and North–South transport corridors. The modernization of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway line has increased its annual freight capacity from 1 million to 5 million tons. In July, ADY and the China State Railway Group reached an agreement to further enhance the line’s capacity. Additionally, ADY appointed a representative to the Xi’an Port and launched a new container terminal there with an annual handling capacity of 20,000 TEUs. Last month, China’s “China Railway Container Transport Corp. Ltd.” (CRCT) joined the joint venture “Middle Corridor Multimodal Ltd.” These developments are significant achievements for the Middle Corridor and East–West–East freight transportation.
Furthermore, it was noted that, under an agreement reached in Washington in August, the Zangazur Corridor—also known as the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP)—will ensure uninterrupted freight flows along the Middle Corridor, driving economic growth and fostering regional integration.
The Chairman of ADY stated that the recent integration of the Port of Baku, which the U.S. business delegation had visited the previous day, into ADY's operations has already yielded positive results. This integration has transformed ADY into a comprehensive transport and logistics group offering railway, port, terminal, and forwarding services. In the first eight months of 2025, Azerbaijan received 265 block trains from China via the Middle Corridor, a significant increase from the 168 trains received during the same period last year. During this same period, the Port of Baku handled nearly 70,000 TEUs of containers, a 47% increase compared to the 47,157 TEUs handled during the corresponding period in 2024.
ADY's priorities were also highlighted: decarbonization to reduce emissions and adopt clean technologies; digitalization to implement smart systems for safer, faster, and more efficient operations; and sustainability to support long-term growth and environmental responsibility.
The U.S. business delegation expressed their gratitude for the detailed information on ADY’s extensive operations. They acknowledged the company's vital role in international corridor freight transportation and confirmed their strong interest in mutual cooperation.
