The Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Rovshan Rustamov, met with the head of Iranian Railways, Jabbar Ali Zakeri Sardrudi, during the latest session of the Azerbaijan-Iran Intergovernmental Joint Commission held in Tehran.
During the meeting, the leaders of the railway administrations discussed the expansion of activities at the cargo terminal located in the Iranian city of Astara and reviewed the progress of work on the site.
It was highlighted that the terminals in Astara, situated in both Azerbaijan and Iran, play a pivotal role in accelerating and increasing the efficiency of growing freight flows through the North-South Corridor. These terminals also contribute to the realization of the corridor’s strategic potential, the strengthening of transport infrastructure in both countries, and the development of regional trade.
As part of the meeting, Azerbaijan Railways and Iranian Railways signed a “Strategic Cooperation Plan for the Implementation of the Agreement on the Construction and Operation of the Astara Terminal.”
The document is based on the railway section of the protocol signed on January 22, 2025, as part of the 16th Intergovernmental Joint Commission between Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran. It covers the approval of the master plan for the Astara terminal, the completion of construction work by the end of the current year, the recognition of final investments, and other key aspects.
