Azerbaijan Railways has completed the majority of construction work on the Astara terminal

As part of the development of the North–South International Transport Corridor, the «Azerbaijan Railways» CJSC has carried out large-scale work on the construction of one of the corridor’s key elements — the Astara terminal, located in the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

To date, 85% of design work and 72.4% of construction and installation work on the terminal have been completed. A 8.3 km railway line has been laid from Astara station to the Iranian border, and a rail bridge over the Astarachay River has been constructed. The project also provides for the construction of seven bridges — one of which is fully completed, and 90% of the work on the remaining six bridges is done.

In 2023, 692,000 tons of cargo were handled through the Astara terminal, and in 2024, the figure has already exceeded 777,000 tons. Upon full completion, the terminal’s annual handling capacity is expected to reach 3.5 million tons.

The Astara terminal will significantly contribute to increasing the volume of freight traffic along the North–South corridor and ensure efficient execution of logistics operations.

It is worth noting that construction of the terminal began in 2017, based on an intergovernmental agreement between Azerbaijan and Iran.

The terminal is located in the Iranian city of Astara, just 1.4 km from the Azerbaijan–Iran border. The land for construction was leased to Azerbaijan by the Iranian government for a period of 25 years, and the construction itself is being carried out by Azerbaijan Railways.
