«Azerbaijan Railways» CJSC (ADY) participated in the European "Silk Road" Summit held in Vienna.
Emil Mammadov, Advisor to the Chairman of ADY, delivered a presentation on the Middle Corridor, emphasizing Azerbaijan's role in its development and ADY's efforts to expand regional and international cooperation to increase transit cargo volumes.
E. Mammadov highlighted the importance of integrating the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars (BTK) railway into the realization of the Middle Corridor's potential. He noted that BTK, with an annual capacity of 5 million tons, offers a shorter and faster route for transit and export cargo from China to Europe.
The summit participants were informed about how European logistics operators and freight forwarding companies can benefit from the new opportunities offered by the Middle Corridor for regional transportation. Discussions also included the formation of a west-to-east cargo base, transportation of goods through Turkey and BTK within the framework of the Middle Corridor, and ADY's efforts in this direction.
E. Mammadov stated that the modernization of BTK was completed last year, and a joint venture with Georgia was established to ensure the efficient operation of the route. Additionally, another joint venture was founded by Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan to further develop the Middle Corridor.
ADY continues its efforts to enhance the corridor's development. This month, the first export block train from Azerbaijan to China was dispatched, consisting of 62 forty-foot containers. Passing through Kazakhstan, the cargo will be delivered to one of China's largest dry ports — Xi’an. By the end of the year, 600 containers of export goods are expected to be shipped from Azerbaijan to China.
The event also discussed the establishment of the International Association of the Eurasian Transport Route, involving railway organizations from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Central Asia, and Europe. During the meeting held in Baku, with the participation of representatives from Austrian Railways, it was emphasized that the new association aims to revitalize the southern branch of the Middle Corridor and increase cargo volumes.
